Press Statement

The National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) is continuing its preparations for the 2010 elections notwithstanding the departure of its present national chairperson.

In a letter dated 24 September to the NAMFREL National Council, Ambassador Henrietta de Villa tendered her resignation as National Chairperson, and thanked NAMFREL for the “trust in trying out a new leadership.” The letter was addressed to the Council’s National Vice Chairman, Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. who will function as Acting National Chairman.

Ambassador de Villa will devote her full time to head PPCRV (Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting) in light of the heavy demands for voter education entailed by the automated election system.

NAMFREL recognizes and thanks the invaluable contributions of Ambassador de Villa to its cause of free and honest elections. The National Council respects and accepts Ambassador de Villa’s decision.
