NAMFREL PREPARES FOR NEW LEADERSHIP

The National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) is continuing its preparations for the 2010 elections notwithstanding the departure of its present national chairperson.

In a letter dated 24 September to the NAMFREL National Council, Ambassador Henrietta de Villa tendered her resignation as National Chairperson, and thanked NAMFREL for the “trust in trying out a new leadership.” The letter was addressed to the Council’s National Vice Chairman, Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. who will function as Acting National Chairman.

Ambassador de Villa will devote her full time to head PPCRV (Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting) in light of the heavy demands for voter education entailed by the automated election system.

NAMFREL recognizes and thanks the invaluable contributions of Ambassador de Villa to its cause of free and honest elections. The National Council respects and accepts Ambassador de Villa’s decision.

NAMFREL UPHOLDS POLICY ON NON-PARTISANSHIP

At its meeting of 22 September 2009 the NAMFREL National Council considered resignations individually submitted from four of its members who will actively support various candidates of their choice in the 2010 elections. The said members were Ambassador Narcisa Escaler, and Messrs. Ramon R. del Rosario, Edward Go, and Alberto Lim.

While recognizing the valuable contributions of the resigning four members to NAMFREL’s crusade for free and honest elections, the Council regretfully accepted their resignation in accordance with the organization’s policy of non-partisanship.

The leadership and volunteerism initiatives of NAMFREL continue to remain strong and in due course the remaining members of the Council will select nominees from its ranks for the vacated posts.
